Commands

Commands let a promote action do more than move the instance to another state. Depending on the configuration, a command can update values, send notifications, unlink related instances, or execute program logic.

Use commands for outcomes that are part of the transition itself:

  • Set completion dates or approval fields.
  • Notify owners, reviewers, or stakeholders.
  • Recalculate parent progress when a child task is completed.
  • Create or update related records.
  • Call an integration program.

Keep long-running or heavy processing outside the user-facing promotion path when possible. For asynchronous work, use a scheduler, system event pattern, or common program pattern from the Programs documentation.
